So Long Dulcet Tones

Dave Morey’s retiring.

If you don’t know who he is, he’s the morning DJ on KFOG, where he’s worked for 26 years. (He’s worked in radio for 40.) If you’re a radio geek (and I know at least one of my readers is) you should really read his blog post wherein he announces his retirement.

He says:
I’m leaving the Bay Area – returning to Michigan. It’s hard to explain to someone who’s not from there so I won’t even try.

I’m not from Michigan, but having spent a lot of time there, I completely understand. It calls you. My parent’s live there now, and I’m super excited to be going home to visit Halloween weekend, especially since my girlfriend will be coming with and get to see it too.

I got to do top-of-the-hour legal IDs for WLS and WLW. Never worked for either but thanks to friends, my voice once E-nunciated:
“MusicRadio - WLS…Chicago”

I thought he sounded familiar.

I will be doing 10@10 and other stuff for KFOG from the luxurious state-of-the-art home studio located on the 2nd floor loft of my lakefront villa.

Yay!

Favorite part of the job?
Running that control board. It’s like flying a plane - except nobody gets hurt when you crash. And I HAVE crashed!

But - to sit down, play music, talk one-on-one with listeners…and get paid for it - that is one fine job. And - yes….I can make comparisons. I’ve also worked as a house painter and movie theater popcorn boy/projectionist.

Lemme tell ya - Radio is the best.

  1. Michigan was cold...but damn it is beautiful there. They have trees. It smells different. I walked several hundred feet through the snow in the park before I realized I was walking on the river.

    I understand.

In 1789, the governor of Australia granted land and some animals to James Ruse in an experiment to see how long it would take him to support himself. Within 15 months he had become self sufficient. The area is still known as Experiment Farm. This is my Experiment Farm to see how long it will take me to support myself by writing.
