Shorts

My nephew turned 9 last week. In honor of this my sister wrote a "25 Things" post to her blog about him (ala the Facebook Meme). My favorite was:

3. He was sad when we finished reading the Harry Potter books. Not because we were finished, but because he had been rooting for Voldemort all along.

This is an old piece of news, but in case you missed it: The last time the space shuttle Discovery took off a bat was clinging to the fuel tank. NASA had assumed it would fly away at some point (as bats in 1996 and 1998 did), but this one held on at least until the orbiter had cleared the tower, possibly longer. More photos here. On the left, the location of the bat is marked by the tiny red circle.

In 1789, the governor of Australia granted land and some animals to James Ruse in an experiment to see how long it would take him to support himself. Within 15 months he had become self sufficient. The area is still known as Experiment Farm. This is my Experiment Farm to see how long it will take me to support myself by writing.
