The playoffs started yesterday, and unlike the last two years, the Cubs were not a participant. They made some curious moves last off-season that left them very thin. When they suffered a crop of injuries, they just couldn’t keep up.
Even so, they only finished 7.5 games behind St. Louis. That’s not very many in the grander scheme of things. It’s reasonable to think that had the Cubs starters been healthy all year, they could have won the division. Heck, Kevin Gregg alone lost 6 games for the Cubs this season. Substitute a solid closer and the Cubs are in a re-match with the Dodgers right now, even with their rag-tag group of backup players.
The point is, don’t panic. Add some depth. Get rid of Bradley. Fortunately Gregg is a free agent. Just let him go. Do those things, and we’ve got a solid shot. After all, the NL Central Pennant winner has either been the Cubs or the Cardinals 9 of the last 10 years. I like those odds.
