Star Wars the High School Musical

Back in 1996 students at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in California put together an operatic musical adaptation of Star Wars. They used music from musicals such as Les Miserables and Grease and created something really fun.

It only ran for three performances, but now, due to the glories of video tape, computers, and the internet, the entire thing is now available online, thanks to Salon.com. Even better, it's been subtitled; so when the audio drops out, you can still tell what's going on.

I watched the whole thing. It's pretty freakin' amazing. I mean, it's a high school production, so it's not perfect. Still, parts of it are brilliant.

Rather than cut and paste each part, I'm just going to link you to the VIMEO page: Star Wars the Musical: Act 1 Part 1. They are also all embedded in the Salon.com post.

If you don't want to invest an hour or more into it, I recommend Act 1 Part 3 and Act 2 Part 3 (the ends of each act).

Here's a clip from YouTube (sans subtitles) to whet your appetite. (Be warned, it's much more enjoyable to watch the subtitled version on VIMEO. This song is in Act 1 Part 3.)

In 1789, the governor of Australia granted land and some animals to James Ruse in an experiment to see how long it would take him to support himself. Within 15 months he had become self sufficient. The area is still known as Experiment Farm. This is my Experiment Farm to see how long it will take me to support myself by writing.
